Phone charger

Step 1: Gathering Materials

Gather your build components from the LF Staff. You are responsible for keeping your parts together and bringing them back with you if you plan on completing the build through multiple days. You should receive the following Items:

(1x) Charging Board

Step 2: Wireless Charger Cover

For this project, you are tasked with making a wireless charger cover. There are only a few specific instructions for this project. Otherwise, you can make whatever cover you wish to make out of any material (except metal of course). The next steps will include some sample wireless charger covers. Get creative!

Step 3: Creating Access Holes

Measure where the circular holes and indentations are in the raw board. Build features into your design that locate those points. It may be worth making posts that will keep the cover locked together so that when you plug in your charging cable, it will hold together.

Step 4: Designs

When designing your part, keep in mind the distance between the coil and the charging surface and the material your choose to make it out of. Wood, PLA, and some acrylic will work well, but metal will not. Keep in mind that the thickness of the material will affect how well your design works. Make sure to prototype your design to see if the distance/thickness is a good combination.

Step 5: Testing Your Design

This is a 15W fast wireless charging circuit board following Qi standards. You will have to bring in your own cable and power adapter in order to test. When designing the spacing between the coil and your cable, allow at least 2-4mm clearance.

Step 6: Building Your Design

  • You can 3D print your design, create a wooden base, laser-cut acrylic….the sky’s the limit. Ask a TA if you are not sure where to get started.
  • If you will be woodworking, you need to complete the LF wood shop training.

Step 7: Assembly

Put your Wireless Charger together and test the charging ability to see if there are any last-minute adjustments. After this, you are done!
